Die Vogelgrippe (Avian Influenza, AI) ist eine Infektionskrankheit, die durch Influenzaviren des Typs A aus der Familie der Orthomyxoviridae verursacht wird. Obwohl diese Erreger häufig in verschiedenen Wildvogelpopulationen zirkulieren, stellen sie vor allem für Hausgeflügel wie Hühner, Enten und Puten eine erhebliche Bedrohung dar. Besonders besorgniserregend ist die nachgewiesene Fähigkeit bestimmter Stämme, Artengrenzen zu überwinden, wodurch eine Übertragung auf Säugetiere und Menschen möglich wird.Die Klassifizierung von AI-Viren basiert auf der spezifischen Paarung zweier Glykoproteine an der Oberfläche: Hämagglutinin und Neuraminidase. Forscher haben sechzehn verschiedene Hämagglutinin-Typen (H1 bis H16) und neun Neuraminidase-Typen (N1 bis N9) kategorisiert, die alle in Wildvogelreservoirs nachgewiesen wurden. Genetisch zeichnen sich diese Viren durch ihre segmentierte Struktur aus, die aus acht einzelnen Ribonukleinsäure-Strängen (RNA) besteht.
