The Potemkin and Aurora are two ships that bookended the Russian Revolution.  The Potemkin, a battleship of the Black Sea Fleet, led the first naval mutiny at Odessa in 1905.  The Aurora, after sailing  round the globe in the service of the Tsar and taking part in the defeat at Tsushima by the Japanese in 1905, was adopted by the Bolsheviks to fire the fatal shot that signalled the storming of the Winter Palace in 1917. She lived on, surviving two world wars and was hailed as a 'Hero of the Revolution'.

  • The Groves of Academe
    Brian French
In 1974 I left teaching and entered the world of Higher Education. This was not a good move as I was plunged into the reorganisation of H.E. with its mergers and take overs as Colleges of Education became Polytechnics and then were translated overnight, like Bottom the Weaver, into Universities. What I learned about in those Groves of Academe was politics, at micro and macro le...

This book is a follow up to All Madly Educational, 2015. It covers the period 1959 to 1970. The Third Class Ticket of the title refers to my dismal Classics degree from Newcastle and Paradise was gained in the wonderful post graduate year at Loughborough (1962-3) where  I spent my days playing (studying) sport all day long at the nation's expense. This led to my first teach...
