Lo stato di salute orale dei pazienti con malattie mentali è talvolta considerato secondario rispetto alle altre condizioni di cui soffrono. È dimostrato che questi pazienti sono più vulnerabili all’incuria dentale e alla cattiva salute orale. Il cambiamento di comportamento impedisce loro di conoscere la necessità di igiene e cura orale. Un’altra ragione è che i farmaci assunti per controllare i sintomi psichiatrici alterano la fisiologia del cavo orale. Una cattiva salute orale, tuttavia, comporta disagio, dolore, difficoltà a mangiare e alterazione dell’estetica. Uno studio prospettico sulla salute orale dei pazienti psichiatrici è stato condotto presso il dipartimento psichiatrico del C.H.U. Point G da giugno a luglio 2014. L’obiettivo era quello di determinare la salute orale dei pazienti che si rivolgono alla psichiatria. I pazienti erano 130, di cui 91 maschi e 39 femmine. L’età media era di 33,2 anni. Il target di lettura era costituito da tutti coloro che si interessano di Odontoiatria, Stomatologia, Salute Pubblica, Psichiatria, Medicina Generale.
