O estado de saúde oral dos pacientes com doenças mentais é por vezes considerado secundário em relação a outras condições de que sofrem. Há provas de que estes doentes são mais vulneráveis à negligência dentária e à má saúde oral. A mudança de comportamento impede-os de conhecer a necessidade de higiene e cuidados orais. Outra razão é o facto de os medicamentos que tomam para controlar os sintomas psiquiátricos alterarem a fisiologia da cavidade oral. A má saúde oral, no entanto, leva a desconforto, dor, dificuldade de alimentação e alteração da estética. Foi realizado um estudo prospectivo sobre a saúde oral dos doentes mentais no serviço de psiquiatria do C.H.U. Point G de Junho a Julho de 2014. O objectivo era determinar a saúde oral dos pacientes que consultam a psiquiatria. Havia 130 pacientes, dos quais 91 eram homens e 39 mulheres. A idade média era de 33,2 anos. O público-alvo era constituído por todos os interessados em Medicina Dentária, Estomatologia, Saúde Pública, Psiquiatria e Medicina Geral.
