L’'impossibilité' de la littérature pour enfants est la considération provocatrice que Jacqueline Rose a formulée en 1984, dans son ouvrage Case of Peter Pan, or, the Impossibility of Children’s Fiction (Le cas de Peter Pan ou l’impossibilité de la fiction pour enfants). Cette littérature est-elle de la fiction pour enfants ou n’est-elle qu’une projection adulte de ce que devrait être la fiction pour enfants ? Le même argument peut être avancé en ce qui concerne les romans pour jeunes adultes. Quelle est la part qui leur revient ? L’écriture savante sur la littérature enfantine est tout sauf simple ou enfantine, comme l’ont découvert de nombreux critiques ; l’analyse critique des histoires pour enfants suppose la connaissance de nombreux codes d’interprétation, de développements historiques et d’un énorme corpus littéraire en général. Outre la difficulté pour les adultes de comprendre le monde de l’enfance et de la jeunesse, il est encore plus difficile de saisir les changements rapides dans leur appréciation des histoires et de suivre ces changements. En d’autres termes, il est difficile d’évaluer et de sonder l’implication du destinataire, de l’enfant imaginé ou du jeune imaginé et leurs relations avec les textes qui leur sont adressés. Leur appréciation de ces textes devrait être d’une importance capitale.
