L’'impossibilità' della letteratura per l’infanzia è stata la considerazione provocatoria formulata da Jacqueline Rose nel 1984, nel suo Caso di Peter Pan, o l’impossibilità della narrativa per l’infanzia. Questa letteratura è una narrativa per bambini o è solo una proiezione adulta di ciò che dovrebbe essere la narrativa per bambini? Lo stesso discorso può essere fatto per la narrativa per giovani adulti. Quanta parte di essa è loro? Scrivere di letteratura per ragazzi è tutt’altro che semplice o infantile, come molti critici hanno scoperto; l’analisi critica delle storie per ragazzi presuppone la conoscenza di molti codici interpretativi, degli sviluppi storici e di un enorme corpus letterario in generale. Oltre alla difficoltà degli adulti di comprendere il mondo dell’infanzia e della gioventù, è ancora più difficile cogliere i rapidi cambiamenti nel loro apprezzamento delle storie e tenere il passo con tali cambiamenti. In altre parole, è difficile valutare e sondare le implicazioni del destinatario, del bambino o del giovane immaginato e delle loro relazioni con i testi a loro indirizzati. Il loro apprezzamento di questi testi dovrebbe essere di primaria importanza.
