British captain Robert Falcon Scott and Norwegian expedition leader Roald Amundsen were giants of South Polar exploration before World War I, with several documentaries and other films featuring absorbing, historic, and sometimes controversial narratives about their race to the Pole. This book discusses the genesis, production, shooting, and release details of these films; their reception by audiences and critics; and their present-day prospects. From the original expedition films to a wide range of later documentary and drama productions, this book includes analyses of the various films of Scott’s photographer Herbert Ponting (for example, The Great White Silence) and Amundsen’s lesser-known movie (Sydpolens Erobring), drawing on unearthed movies, diaries, newspapers, and journals that provide a fresh perspective on the subject. Thoroughly researched and illustrated, this volume complementing an earlier book on Sir Ernest Shackleton’s screen legacy also includes a filmography with more than 60 entries.
