Neste estudo, interessa-nos a interpretação estatística da noção de temperatura, com base em alguns dos conceitos utilizados para demonstrar a sua existência. O primeiro capítulo trata de explicar os dois significados físicos da temperatura, o significado termodinâmico em que a temperatura é descrita pela agitação das partículas que constituem a matéria e segue o teorema da equipartição, enquanto o significado estatístico se baseia na ligação entre a entropia e a energia. O segundo capítulo abordará a noção de entropia e as suas interpretações, a estatística onde exprime a falta de informação, e a termodinâmica onde é descrita pelos 2 princípios; o segundo que nos dá a direcção da transformação efectuada e o terceiro de Nernst onde a entropia a 0 kelvin é zero. O terceiro capítulo trata da noção de temperatura negativa, da sua história, da sua definição, da demonstração teórica da sua existência e, finalmente, o quarto capítulo aborda o campo de aplicação desta noção.
