Außerdem wird das Abwasser aus Ölfeldern oder das im Erdölsektor verwendete Produktionswasser beleuchtet. Produktionswasser enthält verschiedene organische und anorganische Bestandteile. In der Zwischenzeit kann die Einleitung von Produktionswasser das Oberflächen- und Grundwasser sowie den Boden verschmutzen. Aufgrund des weltweit steigenden Abfallaufkommens im laufenden Jahrzehnt sind die Folgen und Auswirkungen der Einleitung von Produktionswasser auf die Umwelt in letzter Zeit zu einem bedeutenden Umweltproblem geworden. Das Produktionswasser wird herkömmlicherweise durch unterschiedliche physikalische, chemische und biologische Verfahren behandelt.
