Este trabalho é o resultado do trabalho de campo realizado na cidade de Dschang (Camarões Ocidental) sobre a emergência da Internet móvel e o problema da rentabilidade dos cibercafés. Com base num inquérito a intervenientes seleccionados aleatoriamente, verificou-se que o aparecimento da telefonia móvel com as suas múltiplas novas funções e a utilização da Internet revolucionaram grandemente a vida dos consumidores. Esta nova tecnologia de comunicação para uso pessoal e independente reduziu a rentabilidade da actividade dos cibercafés, que continua a ser apenas um local favorável para ajudar na fotocópia a um custo mais baixo (15 a 25 FCFA/cópia). É de notar que com o sucesso do telemóvel nos Camarões, onde existem cerca de 20 milhões de telefones activos para uma população de 25 milhões de habitantes, é agora a Internet móvel que está a florescer com o aparecimento de 80.000 posses na cidade estudantil de Dschang.
