Questo studio valuta la positività del DNA di Mycobacterium leprae nelle secrezioni nasali (NS) di pazienti con lebbra e di individui sani; e la variabilità genetica tra i ceppi di M. leprae, studiando la relazione con i fattori clinici ed epidemiologici. Sono stati analizzati i campioni di NS di 185 pazienti, 136 individui senza lebbra che frequentavano il Centro di Riferimento Nazionale di Dermatologia Sanitaria Dona Libânia di Fortaleza, Ceará e 121 studenti del Collegio Christus di Fortaleza. Sono state analizzate le biopsie cutanee (SB) di 38 pazienti. Tutti i campioni di SN sono stati sottoposti ad amplificazione della regione RLEP mediante NESTED PCR. Per valutare la diversità genetica di M. leprae tra gli individui, sono stati analizzati i ceppi SN di 48 pazienti RLEP-positivi utilizzando quattro loci VNTR (variable number tandem repeat). Per studiare la variabilità del ceppo nello stesso individuo, sono stati confrontati i campioni BP e SN di 38 pazienti positivi al sistema RLEP utilizzando i 15 loci VNTR.
