I sistemi solari domestici (SHS) sono sistemi fotovoltaici autonomi che offrono una modalità economicamente vantaggiosa di fornitura di energia per l’illuminazione e gli elettrodomestici a famiglie remote non collegate alla rete. Nelle aree rurali, che non sono collegate alla rete, gli SHS possono essere utilizzati per soddisfare la domanda di energia di una famiglia e soddisfare le esigenze elettriche di base. A livello globale, gli SHS forniscono energia a centinaia di migliaia di famiglie in luoghi remoti dove l’elettrificazione tramite rete non è possibile. Gli SHS funzionano solitamente con una tensione nominale di 12 V in corrente continua (DC) e forniscono energia ad apparecchi a bassa potenza in DC come luci, radio e piccoli televisori per circa tre-cinque ore al giorno. Inoltre, utilizzano apparecchi come cavi, interruttori, supporti e parti strutturali e condizionatori/inverter di potenza, che trasformano l’alimentazione a 12/24 V in alimentazione a 240 VAC per gli apparecchi più grandi. Gli SHS sono utilizzati al meglio con apparecchi efficienti, in modo da limitare le dimensioni del campo.
