Die Umkehrung des Satzes des Pythagoras ist gleichbedeutend mit der Erklärung, dass ein Dreieck rechtwinklig ist. Wir betrachten zum Beispiel ein Dreieck mit den Längen 3, 4 und 5. Um zu erklären, dass dieses Dreieck ein rechtwinkliges Dreieck ist, müssen wir die Umkehrung des Satzes des Pythagoras verwenden. Einerseits haben wir 32+42=9+16=25. Andererseits gilt 52=25. Dann gilt 32+42=52 und durch den Kehrwert des Satzes des Pythagoras handelt es sich tatsächlich um ein rechtwinkliges Dreieck. Wenn wir erklären wollen, dass ein Dreieck ein rechtwinkliges Dreieck ist, müssen wir die Summe der Quadrate der beiden kürzesten Längen bilden und prüfen, ob diese Summe gleich dem Quadrat der längsten Seite ist.
