O titanato de bário (BaTiO3: BT) é um material com potencial importante, principalmente devido à sua resposta ferromagnética, elevada constante dieléctrica e grande intervalo de banda, que são muito úteis em aplicações electrónicas. O titanato de bário (BaTiO3) é um material pervoskite ferroelétrico típico que foi preparado através de uma variedade de técnicas, tais como a síntese mecanoquímica, o método sol-gel, a pirólise por pulverização e a reação solvotérmica/hidrotermal. O método hidrotérmico é promissor e encorajador devido à baixa temperatura do processo e à facilidade de controlo do tamanho das partículas. O processo hidrotérmico tem várias vantagens em relação a outros processos de crescimento, tais como a utilização de equipamento simples, o crescimento sem catalisador, o baixo custo, a produção grande e uniforme, o facto de ser amigo do ambiente e, finalmente, menos perigoso. As vantagens adicionais da síntese hidrotérmica para a preparação de BaTiO3 de dimensão nanométrica são as seguintes: i) produz partículas finas e uma distribuição de tamanho estreita, ii) produz BaTiO3 cristalino, iii) menor contaminação e iv) são obtidas várias morfologias.
