Practice to Mastery: AP® United States Government and Politics Workbook is a complete practice program for students taking AP® U.S. Government and Politics or a first college course in American government. It holds 656 original questions - 612 multiple choice and 44 free response - across the five units of the course and one full-length practice examination, and every question comes with a detailed explanation or scoring guide. The book follows the College Board’s current Course and Exam Description unit by unit: Foundations of American Democracy; Interactions Among Branches of Government; Civil Liberties and Civil Rights; American Political Ideologies and Beliefs; and Political Participation. The number of questions in each unit reflects that unit’s weight on the exam, so the most heavily tested material gets the most practice. Each unit opens with a plain-language list of the topics it covers and the required documents and Supreme Court cases it practices. Part 1 combines stand-alone multiple-choice questions with sets of questions built on a shared source, just as the exam does: excerpts from foundational documents, tables, charts, maps and infographics, diagrams, and Supreme Court scenarios. Questions are tagged Easy, Medium or Hard and arranged in that order, so students can build confidence before tackling the hardest items. Each unit then gives free-response practice in all four exam formats: Concept Application, Quantitative Analysis, SCOTUS Comparison and the Argument Essay. Part 2 follows immediately with an answer key, an explanation of every multiple-choice question that teaches the reasoning rather than just naming a letter, and point-by-point scoring guides that show what a full-credit response contains. The workbook covers all thirteen required foundational documents, including the four added in the current framework: the Emancipation Proclamation, Federalist No. 39, the Gettysburg Address and the principles of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. It also covers all fourteen required Supreme Court cases. Students practice describing each case’s facts, holding and reasoning, applying it to new situations, and comparing it with cases they have not studied - the exact skill the SCOTUS Comparison question rewards. The book closes with a full-length practice examination built to the shape of the real one: 55 multiple-choice questions in Section I and four free-response questions in Section II, with complete explanations and scoring guides. Each explanation names the unit and topic tested, so students can see at once where to focus their review.Every question, scenario, data set and explanation was written for this book. Quotations come from public-domain founding documents and Supreme Court opinions and are cited, and every figure is designed to read clearly in black and white. The content is strictly nonpartisan: political institutions, ideologies and contested issues are presented evenhandedly so students can practice analysis without being told what to think.Whether used alongside a course, for focused review before the exam, or for independent study, this workbook gives students the steady, feedback-driven practice that turns knowledge of American government into exam-ready skill. For additional timed practice, the companion volume, Practice to Mastery: AP® United States Government and Politics Practice Exams, offers twelve more full-length examinations with no question repeated from this workbook.AP® and Advanced Placement® are registered trademarks of the College Board, which was not involved in the production of, and does not endorse, this product.
