Durante milhares de anos, com exceção dos últimos séculos, as culturas do Ocidente e da Ásia Oriental desenvolveram-se em grande parte isoladamente. Envolvidas em condições geográficas muito diferentes e influenciadas por processos divergentes de observação da natureza, bem como por imperativos locais de auto-proteção, formaram quadros filosóficos únicos das relações homem - natureza e homem - homem. Circunstâncias diferentes levaram à criação de fundamentos culturais específicos, conceitos contrastantes e inclinações de pensamento diferentes. Estes foram gradualmente incorporados no comportamento e na mente das pessoas como uma espécie de ADN mental e manifestaram-se em diferentes padrões de governação, construções sociais, modelos económicos e relações com o mundo exterior. Por outras palavras, ambas as regiões passaram por incubadoras muito diferentes de evolução mental que deixaram uma forte herança de paradigmas de pensamento e modos de pensar nos nossos tempos modernos. A iluminação das ligações históricas e das raízes das diferentes mentalidades no Ocidente e na Ásia confucionista contribui para uma melhor compreensão de nós próprios e das outras culturas.
