Pendant des milliers d’années, à l’exception des derniers siècles, les cultures occidentales et est-asiatiques se sont développées en grande partie de manière isolée. Engagées dans des conditions géographiques très différentes et influencées par des processus divergents d’observation de la nature ainsi que par des impératifs locaux d’autoprotection, elles ont formé des cadres philosophiques uniques de relations entre l’homme et la nature et entre l’homme et l’homme. Des circonstances différentes ont conduit à la création de fondements culturels spécifiques, de concepts contrastés et de modes de pensée différents. Ils ont été progressivement ancrés dans le comportement et l’esprit des gens comme une sorte d’ADN mental et se sont manifestés dans différents modèles de gouvernance, de constructions sociales, de modèles économiques et de relations avec le monde extérieur. En d’autres termes, les deux régions sont passées par des incubateurs très différents d’évolution des esprits qui ont laissé un solide héritage de paradigmes et de modes de pensée à notre époque moderne. La mise en lumière des liens historiques et des racines des différentes mentalités en Occident et dans l’Asie confucéenne contribue à une meilleure compréhension de nous-mêmes et des autres cultures.
