A partire dalla seconda metà degli anni Ottanta, la letteratura si è occupata di rappresentare i problemi sociali che il Brasile stava affrontando con la fine del regime militare. In questo senso, il presente lavoro propone una riflessione sul rapporto tra emarginazione sociale e sessualità, utilizzando i personaggi del libro Stella Manhattan (SANTIAGO, 1985) e dell’opera A polaquinha (TREVISAN, 1985), entrambi pubblicati nel 1985, anno che segna la fine del regime militare in Brasile. Utilizzando la metodologia della rassegna bibliografica e i riferimenti teorici di Lauretis (1994), Beauvoir (2009), Spivak (2010) e Sartre (1993), questo lavoro si propone di far luce sulla questione della collocazione sociale dei soggetti in conseguenza del loro orientamento sessuale. Saranno presentati anche alcuni teorici, come Hall (1999, 2000, 2003) e Woodward (2000), che si occupano della questione delle identità sociali nella postmodernità. Poiché l’obiettivo di questo libro è quello di tracciare un parallelo tra le due opere, si evidenzierà anche il rapporto tra sessualità e potere, secondo Foucault (1988, 2007), e la questione del patriarcato e del sesso femminile, secondo i presupposti teorici di Engels (1980[1934]).
