La narrazione indaga il posto che le donne di razza mista e di colore occupano nel corpo sociale mozambicano e riflette quindi sull’immenso vuoto esistenziale che le conduce nel loro viaggio. Nell’opera di Mia Couto, la confessione delle 'leonesse nascoste' rimane all’ordine del silenzio per quanto riguarda la trama, ma attraverso il loro discorso riecheggia un grido, quasi una richiesta di aiuto, quando riconoscono il luogo di semi-schiavitù a cui sono sottoposte. La violenza si manifesta innanzitutto attraverso l’impossibilità di scegliere, lasciando loro una sola opzione: annullarsi per poter almeno sopravvivere. Le riflessioni sulla violenza fisica, psicologica e sessuale rivelano come la questione di genere sia costruita attraverso l’estetica della violenza contro le donne mozambicane, sostenuta dalla tradizione e dal sistema patriarcale. I traumi e il dolore discussi in quest’opera ampliano il dibattito sulla violenza di genere che sfida le autorità non solo in Mozambico, ma in tutto il mondo.
