L’Amazzonia brasiliana, una regione immensa e periferica, deve la sua occupazione dal periodo coloniale principalmente a due processi: la geopolitica e l’estrattivismo. Nel XIX secolo, con il controllo imperiale della navigazione sul Rio delle Amazzoni e sui suoi affluenti, e soprattutto con quello che fu chiamato il ciclo della borracha, la regione si trasformò con l’arrivo di migliaia di migranti e l’urbanizzazione di Belém e Manaus, con l’estrattivismo come base della piramide di una società in trasformazione. L’inizio del XX secolo ha portato una crisi, rappresentata dalla concorrenza, ma l’estrattivismo non è morto, si è solo diversificato, perché, come mostra questo testo, le strutture produttive, sociali e persino politiche erano fortemente radicate. Il grande cambiamento avvenne con la Seconda Grande Guerra, quando l’Amazzonia si trasformò in un importante fornitore di materie prime strategiche, soprattutto di caucciù nativo. Il governo brasiliano promosse una migrazione umana verso l’Amazzonia, i 'soldati dell’ubriaco' così ben ritratti in questo testo della prof.ssa Maria Graças S.
