Das brasilianische Amazonasgebiet, eine riesige Region in Randlage, verdankt seine Besetzung seit der Kolonialzeit hauptsächlich zwei Prozessen: Geopolitik und Extraktivismus. Im 19. Jahrhundert, mit der kaiserlichen Kontrolle der Schifffahrt auf dem Amazonas und seinen Nebenflüssen und insbesondere mit dem so genannten Borracha-Zyklus, wurde die Region durch die Ankunft Tausender von Migranten und die Verstädterung von Belém und Manaus umgestaltet, wobei der Extraktivismus die Basis der Pyramide einer Gesellschaft im Wandel bildete. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts kam es zu einer Krise, die durch den Wettbewerb ausgelöst wurde, aber der Extraktivismus starb nicht, er diversifizierte sich nur, denn, wie dieser Text zeigt, waren die produktiven, sozialen und sogar politischen Strukturen fest verwurzelt. Der große Umbruch kam mit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, als das Amazonasgebiet zu einem wichtigen Lieferanten strategischer Rohstoffe wurde, vor allem von einheimischem Kautschuk. Die brasilianische Regierung förderte eine Völkerwanderung in den Amazonas, die 'Soldaten der Säufer', die in diesem Text von Prof. Maria Graças S.
