Il concetto di 'Citta' nello Yoga Sutra di Patanjali (YSP) è molto vicino al termine 'mente' della psicologia moderna, ma ha un significato e un campo di funzionamento più ampio. La 'Citta' è il costituente di 'Indriyas', 'Mana', 'Buddhi' e 'Ahamkara'. Gli Indriya sono gli organi (sensoriali e motori) del nostro corpo, la Mente può essere un nome inglese dato a ’Mana’ [se diamo il nome di ’roba mentale’ a ’Citta’], ’Buddhi’ significa intelletto o intelligenza e Ahamkara significa Io-Sono o ego. In forma più semplice possiamo dire che la mente (’Mana’), insieme alla facoltà discriminativa (’Buddhi’) e all’egoismo (Ahamkara) formano il gruppo chiamato Antahkarana (lo strumento interno). Affinché la cognizione avvenga, gli 'Indriya' (organi) devono interagire con l’'Antahkarana' (lo strumento interno). Lo yoga li identifica come parti costitutive di 'Citta' dell’uomo. Gli animali hanno Citta, ma mancano della facoltà discriminativa Buddhi. Ho sviluppato un modello cognitivo che spiega il concetto di mente e di cognizione come spiegato nella YSP e ho discusso anche le implicazioni del modello.
