Nel complesso una crisi di coscienza senza precedenti. L’era positivista, basata su un ottimismo scientifico illimitato, all’inizio del secolo non è riuscita a mantenere le sue promesse. La storia ha dimostrato che si sbagliava: la contraddizione della rivoluzione industriale rivela che non sempre l’evoluzione è sinonimo di progresso; lo scatenarsi del volgare imperialismo conferma che il nazionalismo romantico si trasforma facilmente in un colonialismo violento, colpevole di aver dimenticato le premesse liberali attraverso le quali sarebbe dovuta avvenire la liberazione dell’uomo. Un’evidente vergogna soffia sulla coscienza europea per aver tradito gli ideali borghesi e per aver frainteso la storia. La scienza sembra essere colpevole. La parentesi 1890-1930 si allunga fino al punto di morte, suggerendo che l’origine di tutto è collocata in una dimensione irrazionale, una zona vaga e opaca, irraggiungibile se non attraverso un’epifania. La civiltà occidentale è in perdita, plasmata da una crisi culturale senza precedenti. L’alba di una nuova era o la fine della storia?
