Il D-Limonene è un composto che può essere ottenuto dalla buccia di agrumi come arance, lime, mandarini, ecc. Il D-limonene prende il nome dal limone ed è uno dei terpeni più comuni presenti in natura. Molti operatori sanitari hanno approvato i potenziali benefici del D-limonene sostenendo che può prevenire o trattare alcune condizioni di salute come la bronchite, il cancro, il diabete, i calcoli biliari, ecc. Viene anche utilizzato nelle industrie per la produzione di liquidi igienizzanti, profumi, pesticidi, ecc. Nel presente studio, il D-Limonene viene estratto utilizzando la buccia delle arance. La buccia delle arance viene fatta bollire in acqua e l’olio estratto viene distillato in corrente di vapore a una temperatura inferiore a 100 °C, ben al di sotto del suo normale punto di ebollizione, che è di 176 °C. L’olio immiscibile può poi essere distillato in acqua. Questo studio sull’estrazione del D-limonene è stato condotto utilizzando diversi solventi, come metanolo e acqua distillata, a varie temperature e tempi di riscaldamento, che hanno fornito risultati diversi da cui si è concluso il processo ottimale. Il D-Limonene così prodotto è stato caratterizzato mediante gascromatografia e spettroscopia di massa.
