Il Papillomavirus umano (HPV) è un virus della famiglia dei Papillomaviridae e il suo genoma è costituito da DNA. È la causa più comune di trasmissione sessuale virale. Il cancro del collo dell’utero è il secondo per incidenza nelle donne di tutto il mondo. Studi recenti hanno dimostrato che alcuni tipi di HPV sono i principali responsabili dello sviluppo di questo tipo di cancro. In base alla loro attività nella carcinogenesi, questo gruppo virale è stato suddiviso in tipi a basso e alto rischio oncogeno. Il Brasile non dispone ancora di una quantità rappresentativa di dati relativi alla prevalenza dell’infezione da HPV. I dati sull’incidenza del virus si ottengono analizzando le pazienti con carcinoma cervicale invasivo, neoplasia intraepiteliale cervicale e altri tipi di infezioni associate. Nel corso degli anni, i test molecolari hanno dimostrato un’elevata sensibilità e specificità nel rilevare il DNA dell’HPV. Queste tecniche mostrano la necessità di applicare una diagnosi virale più sensibile e specifica, contribuendo al controllo dell’infezione virale e riducendo l’incidenza e la mortalità causata dal cancro cervicale.
