Zijn het échte herinneringen die hij heeft of zijn ze aangepraat? De gesprekken bereiden San voor op de uiteindelijke grote stap aan het einde van zijn leven en resulteren in filosofische beschouwingen over de zin van het leven. Is iemand verantwoordelijk voor de beslissingen die in zijn of haar leven genomen worden of zijn we maar een onderdeel van een geheel, waar we maar in zeer geringe mate sturing aan kunnen geven? Is schuldgevoel aangepraat, wat is de zin van studie. Waarom laten we ons leiden door status en verwachtingspatronen? Is de roeping van de mens , mens zijn of hebben we allemaal onze eigen agenda? De zoektocht voert ons door de vroege jaren van San in Brazilië. En toetsen de herinneringen uit Java, Indonesië en brengen ons uiteindelijk naar Andalusïe, waar San net als zijn grootvader in Java plantages heeft. Is het leven cyclisch? ’Wat kunnen we verwachten na dit leven? Zijn we lichamen of hebben we lichamen ter beschikking. Zijn alter ego corrigeert San tot hij de waarheden beseft die echt van belang zijn. Waarheden die universeel zijn.
