A cirurgia plástica periodontal é o procedimento cirúrgico realizado para corrigir ou eliminar defeitos anatómicos, de desenvolvimento, traumáticos ou induzidos por doenças da gengiva, da mucosa alveolar ou do osso. O objetivo da terapia periodontal é estabelecer e manter a dentição e o periodonto saudáveis, confortáveis e funcionais com uma estética óptima ao longo da vida do paciente. A adição de 'estética óptima' ao objetivo da terapia periodontal é paralela a uma mudança de paradigma em toda a medicina dentária. Estes procedimentos dão-lhe a melhor hipótese de melhorar a sua saúde oral geral. Se não for tratada, a recessão gengival pode resultar em cáries, doenças gengivais graves, mobilidade dentária e eventual perda de dentes.
