Biologische Invasionen sind die zweitgrößte Quelle für die Zerstörung von Ökosystemen. Doch das Wissen über invasive Taxa ist in Burundi nach wie vor lückenhaft. Um die Manager invasiver Pflanzen zu unterstützen, wurde eine Studie in den Sümpfen des Ruvubu-Flusses, des wichtigsten Flusses in Burundi, durchgeführt. Das Ziel bestand darin, : Eine floristische Bestandsaufnahme durchzuführen; die Vielfalt der invasiven Pflanzen hervorzuheben und einen floristischen Gradienten zu bestimmen. Die pflanzensoziologische Methode wurde verwendet, um den floristischen Reichtum zu ermitteln. Die Bestimmung der invasiven Pflanzen erforderte eine Kombination aus dem durchschnittlichen Deckungsgrad und den biologischen Merkmalen der invasiven spezifischen Plastizität der vorherrschenden Arten. Die Ergebnisse zeigten 161 Arten, die sich auf 125 Gattungen und 54 Familien verteilten. 13 nachgewiesene invasive Arten und sieben weitere Arten potenziell invasiver Pflanzen wurden aufgenommen und verteilten sich auf sechs botanische Familien, von denen zwei (Poaceae und Asteraceae) am stärksten vertreten waren. Der floristische Gradient der invasiven Pflanzen nimmt vom Oberlauf zum Unterlauf des Flusses zu.
