La narrazione in prosa di Erodoto è un dialogo costante in cui le opinioni su un argomento sono esposte al suo destinatario, l’ascoltatore-lettore, sia attraverso le parole dello storico sia attraverso la voce dei suoi personaggi. La sua opera si basa su un modo di conoscere legato al vedere, ma soprattutto all’ascoltare; del resto, la narrazione di questo storico si basa su informazioni testimoniali. Erodoto scrive in base a: ciò che ha sentito, akoêi grápho (HDT, II: 123); ciò che viene detto, tà dè legetai gráfo (HDT, IV: 195); ciò che dicono i Greci, katà tà legómena hyp’Hellénon egò gráfho (HDT, VI: 53). A sua volta, il destinatario, ricevendo la sua narrazione, è invitato a esprimere anche la sua opinione. Questo intenso dialogo tra Erodoto, i personaggi delle sue Storie e il suo ascoltatore-lettore produce l’effetto di un’assemblea popolare che si svolge in una comunità politica guidata dalla democrazia. Erodoto è un narratore in senso benjaminiano, perché non intende costruire una sintesi per il lettore. Al contrario, il suo lettore-ascoltatore è costantemente invitato o addirittura chiamato a riflettere e a elaborare un’opinione personale.
