A narrativa em prosa de Heródoto é um constante diálogo em que as opiniões sobre um assunto são expostas ao seu destinatário, o ouvinte-leitor, seja pelas palavras do historiador ou pela voz de suas personagens. Sua obra fundamenta-se na forma de saber que está relacionada ao ver, mas principalmente ao ouvir, afinal a narrativa desse historiador está baseada nas informações de testemunhos. Heródoto escreve de acordo com: o que ouviu, akoêi grápho (HDT, II: 123); o que se diz, tà dè legetai gráfo (HDT, IV: 195); o que dizem os gregos, katà tà legómena hyp’Hellénon egò gráfho (HDT, VI: 53). Por sua vez, o destinatário, ao receber sua narrativa, é convidado a também manifestar sua opinião. É esse diálogo intenso entre Heródoto, as personagens de suas Histórias e seu ouvinte-leitor, que produz um efeito de assembleia popular realizada em uma comunidade política pautada pela democracia. Heródoto é um narrador no sentido benjaminiano, pois não pretende construir uma síntese para o leitor. Ao contrário, seu ouvinte-leitor é constantemente convidado ou mesmo intimado a refletir e elaborar uma opinião pessoal.
