O etnocentrismo define o equilíbrio social básico de cada sociedade. Isto é transversal à cor da pele, ao grau de educação e à exposição, entre outros factores. O Holocausto judeu e o genocídio ruandês têm uma coisa em comum: a utilização do etnocentrismo como instrumento político. Por uma questão de clareza, é necessária uma exposição pormenorizada do genocídio do Ruanda para se ter uma noção clara dos factores subjacentes que resultaram num dos piores crimes contra a humanidade no século XXI, e da forma como estes influenciam o nível de intervenção ou de resposta dada pela UA (Hintjens, 1999). Por conseguinte, o principal objetivo deste estudo é avaliar a intervenção da UA na crise do Ruanda e os seus êxitos nas últimas duas décadas. Isto é necessário para avaliar os esforços da UA depois de ter posto em prática medidas para oferecer medidas atempadas de resposta para remediar as falhas na R2P durante o genocídio.
