A History of Europe, from 911 to 1198 Originally published in 1938, by the Professor of Medieval History at the University of Cambridge. An exhaustive study that explores the early history of Europe through the development of three main themes - The Empire (later Empire and Papacy), Christianity and Islam (or, alternatively, East and West), and France. Each of these is traced in four stages: up to the middle of the 11th Century, in the second half of that century, and in the two halves of the 12th century.
