O objetivo desta tradução é trazer ao público brasileiro a obra Biblioteca Histórica, de Diodoro da Sicília, também conhecido como Diodoro Sículo (???d???? ? S??e???). Diodoro nasceu na cidade de Agira, na Sicília, por volta de 85 a.C., e faleceu por volta de 25 a.C. Entre os anos 60 e 57 a.C., esteve no Egito, onde deu início à sua Biblioteca, trabalhando nela pelos trinta anos seguintes. Em 56 a.C., viajou para Roma, onde permaneceu e pode ter falecido. A Biblioteca Histórica (??ß??????? ?st?????) originalmente compreendia 40 livros, dos quais somente os livros 1-5 (sobre os egípcios, assírios, etíopes e gregos) e o livro 11-20 (história grega entre 480–302 a.C.) sobreviveram intactos. Dos demais, restam apenas fragmentos. Apesar da perda, a Biblioteca ainda é o relato mais extenso, feito na Antiguidade, sobre a história da Grécia e Roma, desde as origens até as últimas décadas da República Romana.
