O autor tenta concetualizar a filosofia da linguagem de Ludwig Wittgenstein e apresentá-la através da análise e interpretação do conto de Franz Kafka 'Construir a Grande Muralha da China'. A caraterística da linguagem, que, segundo Wittgenstein, consiste na identidade de significados que podem ser atribuídos à validade intersubjectiva das regras, pode ser considerada adequada para uma análise das relações sociais do mundo chinês neste trabalho, nomeadamente de acordo com o atomismo lógico da teoria da imagem, bem como de acordo com a teoria pragmática dos jogos de linguagem do filósofo. Discute também até que ponto a ênfase repetida de Wittgenstein na ligação entre a linguagem e a forma de vida pode conduzir à verdade e ao conhecimento, tanto a nível subjetivo como social. Na forma de sociedade narrada por Kafka, o poder da linguagem sob a forma do comando imperial e da lenda mítica revela-se uma dinâmica intransponível e imutável.
