Und dann ist der 22. Juni 1941 angebrochen. Um 03.00 Uhr fahren wir - hochgeschreckt in unseren Zelten empor, Krieg! Krieg gegen die Sowjetunion! Die Erde erbebt, ein Artilleriefeuer, wie ich es noch nicht erlebt habe! Wir werden durch die ständigen Abschüsse geschüttelt und gerüttelt. Es dauert bis gegen 04.30 Uhr. Die Batterien müssen ihre Feuerstellungen ganz in unserer Nähe haben. Es dröhnt, rauscht und knallt - ohne Unterbrechung - 1½ Stunden lang! Dann ist plötzlich Ruhe. Doch uns schüttelt es irgendwie weiter. Es sind die Nerven, es ist die ungeheure Anspannung, die den ganzen Körper erfaßt hat. Nun wissen wir, was die Stunde geschlagen hat.
