Chirurgie (aus dem Griechischen: χειρουργική cheirourgikē (zusammengesetzt aus χείρ, 'Hand', und ἔργον, 'Arbeit'), über lateinisch: chirurgiae, was 'Handarbeit' bedeutet) ist ein medizinisches Fachgebiet, das operative manuelle und instrumentelle Techniken an einem Patienten anwendet, um einen pathologischen Zustand wie eine Krankheit oder Verletzung zu untersuchen oder zu behandeln, um die Körperfunktion oder das Aussehen zu verbessern oder um unerwünschte Bruchstellen zu reparieren. Die Durchführung eines chirurgischen Eingriffs kann als 'chirurgisches Verfahren', 'Operation' oder einfach 'Chirurgie' bezeichnet werden. In diesem Zusammenhang bedeutet das Verb 'operieren', eine Operation durchzuführen. Das Adjektiv 'chirurgisch' bezieht sich auf die Chirurgie, z. B. chirurgische Instrumente oder chirurgische Krankenschwester.
