Stillen hat sich als Goldstandard der Säuglingsernährung etabliert, und ausschließliches Stillen wird für die ersten sechs Lebensmonate eines Kindes empfohlen. Nach Angaben der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) werden weltweit weniger als 40 % der Kinder bis zu sechs Monaten ausschließlich gestillt. In Ghana werden schätzungsweise 52 % der Kinder ausschließlich gestillt, bei berufstätigen Müttern sind es etwa 10,3 %. In dieser Studie wurde daher untersucht, welche Unterstützung berufstätige Mütter in Schulen, Gesundheitseinrichtungen und Banken in Bezug auf das ausschließliche Stillen am Arbeitsplatz in Tamale Central Sub-Metropolitan in der Northern Region erfahren.
