Il cancro è una malattia devastante che colpisce quasi tutte le età. Fondamentalmente, le cellule cancerose sono quelle cellule che hanno perso il controllo abituale sulla loro crescita e divisione. Sono caratterizzate da immortalizzazione, trasformazione e metastasi. La metastasi distingue un tumore maligno (capacità di invadere i tessuti normali) da un tumore clinicamente benigno (non invade i tessuti normali). La formazione del tumore può essere spontanea o indotta da agenti cancerogeni o virus tumorali. Su base molecolare è causata dall’attivazione di oncogeni, dalla perdita di funzione di geni soppressori di tumori, dalla deregolazione di geni per la riparazione del DNA e la stabilità genomica.
