En febrero de 1925, los kunas de Panamá, en respuesta a años de malos tratos, se alzaron en una breve rebelión, la denominada Revolución Tule. Este controvertido evento involucró a los Estados Unidos así como también a Panamá: los kunas contaban con el apoyo de un notorio explorador estadounidense, quien creyó haber descubierto una tribu perdida de "indios blancos", y se le puso fin a la rebelión a través de negociaciones promovidas por el ministro estadounidense en Panamá, quien visitó la región kuna a bordo de un crucero.James Howe, quien ha estudiado la cultura e historia kunas durante los últimos 30 años, produjo un amplio relato no sólo de la rebelión misma y sus antecedentes inmediatos, sino también del cuarto de siglo que la precedió, durante el cual, en gran parte pacíficamente, los kunas opusieron resistencia a  la policía, los burócratas, los misioneros y los capitalistas que trataron de dominarlos, explotarlos y transformarlos. Como tal, este relato esclarece la historia de Panamá y el papel de los Estados Unidos en Latinoamérica, así como también el destino de los pueblos indígenas en el mundo moderno.
