Negli ultimi anni, il grande aumento dell’importanza relativa delle Organizzazioni Nonprofit, dette anche Organizzazioni della Società Civile, in settori chiave come la salute, l’istruzione, i diritti umani, la cultura e altri, comporta una maggiore responsabilità nella leadership e nella gestione di queste organizzazioni. Esse hanno anche diversificato il loro ambito di attività, passando da settori più tradizionali come la salute e l’istruzione a settori più innovativi come lo sviluppo di energie alternative in popolazioni isolate o la valutazione delle forze di polizia. Oggi non c’è praticamente area dello sviluppo umano in cui queste organizzazioni non intervengano attivamente. Tutto ciò favorisce un maggiore controllo, sia da parte dei propri stakeholder sia da parte del pubblico in generale. In effetti, lo scrutinio da parte degli stakeholder è di solito abbastanza equo, dato che di solito dispongono di maggiori informazioni sull’organizzazione. D’altra parte, il pubblico in generale è spesso immerso in pregiudizi, positivi o negativi, che alterano la possibilità di giungere a conclusioni valide e fondate sul loro operato. È qui che la trasparenza e la responsabilità diventano decisioni strategiche decisive per la credibilità del settore non profit.
