L’envie de fumer et les symptômes de sevrage pourraient être contrôlés en fournissant aux fumeurs de la nicotine provenant d’une source alternative. La nicotine pure n’est pas facile à administrer, car c’est uncomposé instable .Diverses formes d’administration de la nicotine ont été testées et une formulation de gomme à mâcher dans laquelle la nicotine était liée à une résine (pour éviter que le médicament ne soit libéré trop rapidement) a été lancée comme premier produit de TRN - Nicorette® Gum - sur le marché mondial en 1978 . Lapoursuite du développement a abouti à l’introduction du patch Nicorette® en 1992, du spray nasal Nicorette® (1994), de la gomme Nicorette® (1994) et de la gomme Nicorette® (1994).(1994), de l’inhalateur Nicorette® (1996) et du comprimé sublingual Nicorette® (1998). Le nom Nicorette® provient du fait que la nicotine est délivrée de la 'bonne' manière (= rätt, en suédois).
