The late 1980s and early 1990s saw a major shift in the United Nations' position in the world. Having been side-lined for most of the Cold War years, the organisation suddenly returned to the international centre stage. Large, multidimensional peacekeeping operations were a catalyst in this process. The United Nations and peacekeeping, 1988–95 explores the change in the UN's role through an analysis of the evolving theory and practice of peacekeeping operations from 1988 to 1995.
