The strength-ductility paradox originally referred to the fact that the plasticity of titanium is improved when subjected to high-pressure torsion. This is also known as the SPD-paradox, where SPD is the initialism of severe plastic deformation. Today, we know that short-term annealing of the deformed material increases the strength and ductility simultaneously. The same phenomenon is also observed in other pure metals, in alloys and in metal-matrix composites. The book reviews the strength-ductility paradox in a wide range of materials, and the range of mechanisms involved. The book references 119 original resources with their direct web links for in-depth reading. Keywords: Severe Plastic Deformation, Pure Metals, Non-Ferrous Alloys, Ferrous Alloys, High Entropy Alloys, Composites.

  • Superhydrophobic Metal Surfaces
    David Fisher
The fact that water droplets are far from wetting the surface upon which they stand leads to many associated tendencies, such as impeding fogging, icing and corrosion. The book covers the ways in which superhydrophobicity has been imparted to metals. Metals themselves tend more naturally to be hydrophilic; and so imparting superhydrophobicity relies upon adding some sort of coa...

Structure-directed synthesis aims at the design and preparation of novel solid-state structures; using the structure-directing capability of some molecular additive, the so-called structure-directing agent. This general train of thought has led to the development of many weird and wonderful strategies. The book presents an in-depth review of the field and discusses the potentia...

Graphene supercapacitors, also called ultracapacitors or electrical double-layer capacitors, have increasingly begun to rival conventional batteries. They allow to manipulate the nanoscale structure of carbon-based supercapacitors and offer the additional advantage of sequestering increasing amounts of carbon from the environment, thus helping to limit global warming.
