For decades, Iran has had to deal with an intricate balance of sanctions, each one exacerbating the country’s social and economic conditions. This volume impacts the profound and often distressing effects of these measures on the lives of ordinary Iranians. It moves beyond the large-scale economic indicators and political analysis to show the ground-level effect of sanctions on the lives of people, communities, and the socio-structural dynamics of Iran. Integrating economic indicators, social science literature, journalism, and even personal accounts when available, the book painstakingly documents the impacts of sanctions in various facets of Iranian life. It addresses issues such as the relentless economic burdens which include rampant inflation, unemployment particularly among the youth, the lack of essential goods and medicines, and so on. The book goes on to reveal what is considered the ’underbelly’ of the issue; how these economic burdens manifest into ’dare’ for families concerning their day-to-day needs like food, medical care, and schooling of children. The book further investigates the dire social consequences aside from the economic sanctions. It explores the consequences of limited international trade and financial dealings on the availability of important medical and other technologies which are crucial to public health. It looks at how the psychological effects of economic insecurity and uncertainty contribute to heightened stress levels, anxiety, and increased social fragmentation. In addition to this, the book investigates the effects of sanctions on cultural exchange, academic collaboration, and Iranians’ connection to the world, which fosters a feeling of isolation and constraint. It examines the disproportionate distribution of the burden of sanctions in the narrative. It analyzes how various socioeconomic groups and regions, including minority communities, uniquely experience the impacts, often deepening existing divides. The book focuses on evaluating the intended and unintended impacts of sanctions-and the question of whether they serve their purpose in inciting political change while drawing attention to the egregious human cost inflicted by sanctions. In addition, 'The Sanctions on Iran: The Economic and Social Impacts on Everyday Life' intricately details the external and internal dynamics surrounding Iran. It analyzes how the government’s policies and coping mechanisms, alongside the indomitable spirit and creativity of the Iranian people, determine their navigation through the challenges sanctions impose. It acknowledges the controversies concerning the driving forces of the sanctions and their geopolitical impact; however, the focus remains-more than anything else-on the realities of Iranians. The overarching goal of this book is to foster an understanding that is both nuanced and empathetic towards the humanitarian aspects of international sanctions. In addition, it aims to make policymakers, scholars and the public aware of the profound social and economic adaptive effects of these international measures on Iranians, while simultaneously capturing the enduring socio-economic hardships faced by them. This is accomplished by accentuating the daily battle, adaptation, and endurance of the Iranian people; ultimately contributing to the ongoing debate concerning the morality and efficiency of international sanctions as a foreign policy instrument.
