Amsterdam in 1950 was a country moving out of the German occupation - a City bent on rooting out the collaborators of the war to mitigate some of the guilt of the past in the treatment of their Jews. Ruth is a refugee from Auschwitz having lost her family, her home and, almost, her reason. But, she is intelligent, and when she befriends a youth from a tugboat who also suffers from mental illness there is a remarkable meeting of minds, as both suffer from fear: one of the past and one of the future. The story tells of their road to rebuilding their lives, finding happiness again among the bustling harbour but, a place also where, through her loyalty to her new friends Ruth becomes entangled with the traffic in Dutch collaborators fleeing the country.

  • Meritocrats
    Stuart Evans
Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...

  • All the Wasted Beauty of the World - Poems
    Richard Newman
All the Wasted Beauty of the World, a finalist for the 2012 Able Muse Book Award, extols the beautiful as readily as it expounds on the blemished. The reasoned commingles with the rambunctious, as with the speaker who declares that 'our lives span diaper to diaper,/ and in between we piss on anyone/ we can.' Little escapes notice in these poems of gutsy realism and formal deftn...
