This book tells the tale of Eric, an orphan forced to work long hours in a cannery until one morning he decides to explore the woods behind the factory. That morning began no differently from any morning, though it was to be the beginning of all things new for Eric. This first sentence of Ethel Cook’s book The House in the Fairy Wood starts the reader off on a delightful adventure. There he finds refuge and love at the home of Helma and her daughter, Ivra. Helma is a human, but Ivra is a half-fairy child and introduces Eric to snow witches, bird fairies, wind creatures, forest children and the magic of the world around them all.
