At half past one in the morning, the laundrette is warm, brightly lit, and almost empty. Beyond its windows, rain sweeps along Anchor Street. Inside, Nell Archer is counting the hours until her shift ends when a washing machine that has been out of order for years starts turning by itself. There is a yellow raincoat inside. Nell knows the drum was empty. She knows the water supply is shut off. What she cannot explain is why the coat is wet, warm at the shoulders, and labelled with the name of a girl who disappeared twenty-five years ago. Then the machine produces a man’s work jacket. Nell can see him across the street, still wearing it.She calls to warn him. A bus passes between them. When it has gone, so has he.The police have questions Nell cannot answer, and the owner of the laundrette, Arthur Sayer, has answers he has spent a lifetime avoiding. He knows whose raincoat she found. He knows what happens when water rises in the culvert beneath the shop. He has kept a ledger of the clothes returned by the machine, each item belonging to someone who never came home.Tonight, the water is rising again.Arthur has spent years telling himself he was watching over the place. The names in his ledger tell a different story. Some belong to people whose families still search. Others are written beside garments nobody remembers bringing in. And on the night his little girl vanished, Arthur shut a flood gate under the building. He has never opened it again. As rain batters the windows, the locked machine begins another cycle. Its glass fogs from the inside. Small hands leave marks where no one could possibly be standing. Beneath the tiles, voices travel through pipes that should have been sealed decades ago. The laundrette’s bright lights stay on, but familiar sounds take on a darker meaning: the click of a door latch, the rattle of a dryer, the steady drip from a sleeve hung up to dry.Nell wants to believe there is a way out. The front door is only a few steps away. A police officer is in the building. Arthur insists he has lived through nights like this before. But the clothes keep coming, and each new load brings the danger closer to her. When the machine returns a cardigan from Nell’s own flat, bearing a name she never stitched into it, she understands that the next person it takes may still be alive.Every attempt to explain it makes Nell sound less believable. The missing man leaves his phone behind, yet the street cameras show only a passing bus. A child’s voice calls from a cupboard too shallow to hold her. The rain outside falls harder while the water indoors begins to run uphill. By the time the officer sees enough to believe her, belief offers no protection. There is a countdown on the control panel. There is a chained wheel in the flooded cellar. There are people somewhere beyond the dark circle of the drum, waiting in a place where the lost are kept with their belongings. To reach them, Nell must decide how much of Arthur’s story she can trust, and whether opening the way beneath the laundrette will bring anyone back at all.The Last Wash is a chilling supernatural horror story about guilt, disappearance, and the things we cannot bear to throw away. It begins with one impossible item of clothing and tightens its grip through a single rain-soaked night. For readers who love an ordinary setting made deeply wrong, a mystery with a human heart, and the awful feeling that something is moving just beyond the glass, this is a story that will stay with you long after the final cycle stops.Check your pockets. Close that door. And if the machine starts when nobody has put anything inside, leave your washing where it is.
