The 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment was stationed in British India and saw no active service until 1942. They remained in India and the Far East throughout WW2 and were assigned to the 71st Indian Infantry Brigade, part of 26th Indian Infantry Division, in 1942, fighting the Imperial Japanese Army in the Burma Campaign and during the Battle of the Admin Box. This was the first major victory against the Japanese in the campaign, and where Major Charles Ferguson Hoey was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the only one to be awarded to the Lincolnshire Regiment during the Second World War. The battalion’s job was to break through the attackers and reinforce those within the Box. After Admin it spent the final stages of the war in Malaya and Sumatra. A Roll of Honour, list of awards and officers’ rolls complete this useful work that forms part of N&MP’s collection of WW2 contemporary histories.
