The Forest is a novel written by Stewart Edward White, originally published in 1903. The story takes place in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, where a group of people are drawn to the beauty and mystery of the forest. The main character, David Carrigan, is a young man who has been sent to the forest to work as a forest ranger. He soon becomes enamored with the natural beauty of the area and the people who live there. As he spends more time in the forest, David becomes involved in a love triangle between two women: Ruth Tolliver, the daughter of a wealthy lumber baron, and Genevieve Landor, a mysterious and beautiful woman who lives alone in the woods. David must navigate his feelings for both women while also dealing with the dangers and challenges of life in the forest. The Forest explores themes of love, nature, and the conflict between civilization and the wilderness. White’s vivid descriptions of the natural world bring the forest to life, and his characters are complex and engaging. The novel is a classic of American literature and remains a beloved work to this day.1904. The book begins: Some time in February, when the snow and sleet have shut out from the wearied mind even the memory of spring, the man of the woods generally receives his first inspiration. He may catch it from some companion’s chance remark, a glance at the map, a vague recollection of a dim-past conversation, or it may flash on him from the mere pronouncement of a name. The first faint thrill of discovery leaves him cool, but gradually, with the increasing enthusiasm of cognition, the idea gains body, until finally it has grown to plan fit for discussion.
