The Age of Single is about the metamorphic journey intimate relationships have undergone. Much of the social revolutions of the sixties have evolved into the so-called new gender politics. A march that accelerated in the sixties became academic by the nineties and ever since has been popularised. The new gender politics we are currently grappling with challenges the deepest meaning of our identities, sexualities and relationships. The masculine and feminine stereotypes attached to traditional heterosexual gender roles have been gradually rejected, with no new societal norms to replace them. New gender politics are shrouded in conflict and controversy, while transforming everything we knew about sexuality and relationships. Our ability to imagine new gender identities has effectively created a new society. So while more of us are without a partner, we undergo something of a disruption in the heterosexual frame. There is a bigger story to be told here, one that we are yet to fully understand. The disruption in heterosexuality is perhaps the story of our time.
